SAB Independent Governance Review (IGR) Workshop

On 1 October 2026, we held an Independence Governance Review (IGR) Workshop for LGPS officers.  This provided an opportunity for officers to engage directly with one another, the SAB secretariat, the Pensions Regulator (TPR) and the National LGPS framework team on undertaking an IGR, Discussions centred around developing a practical and consistent understanding of available approaches, opportunities and challenges in organising and undertaking an IGR.

To encourage open and honest discussion, detailed comments were not recorded, instead, this briefing note provides a high-level summary of the key themes and issues raised during the session.

We are currently considering the next steps following the workshop. One of the strongest messages from attendees was the value of greater collaboration on the specification of an IGR. In response, we are discussing with the LGPS Frameworks Team the possibility of developing supporting material and exploring how quickly this could be produced, given the concerns raised on the day regarding implementation timescales.
