Welcome event for new councillors with LGPS responsibilities

On Tuesday 15 September 2026, we held a virtual welcome event for new councillors with LGPS responsibilities. The event was well attended with 58 councillors from 27 funds.

An opening poll on attendees’ confidence in their understanding of the LGPS showed varying levels of confidence, reflecting the learning curve for those new to the scheme.

Attendees heard from Clair Alcock, SAB Secretary on the SAB’s statutory role and the support it provides to the LGPS and Board Chair, Cllr Roger Phillips OBE.

A second poll asked which topics attendees had needed the most support with since taking on their role. Governance and pooling were the main areas identified, alongside investment, fiduciary duty and developing a broader understanding of the LGPS and councillors’ responsibilities.
