Local government reorganisation guidance released

The Board is delighted that new guidance has been issued from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) on 30 July 2026 for LGPS administering authorities going through local government reorganisation.

Not only does this emphasise how important the choice of where the pensions functions will sit actually is, but for the first time it acknowledges that “there can be good strategic and practical reasons for creating an SPPA”. There are three good reasons for thinking this model can work – South Yorkshire Pension Authority, London Pensions Fund Authority and now Surrey. The guidance also provides a clear timeline for funds to work to in making their decisions and the Board will do all it can to support them in working through their options in time for that
